Students Using Puppet Pals in Groups |
Lesson Objective
To help Kindergarten students better understand a complex play situation, and give them tools to effectively communicate in that situation.
Time: 30 minutes
Tools: iPads 3 students per device, using Puppet pals version 1
Begin by showing the set-up scenario movie:
Pig and Sheep are playing a game and Cow approaches
Pig: This is a great game! I love playing Sky Pilot.
Sheep: It is fun, watch this
Cow approaches
Cow: Let’s play jump rope!
Sheep: No way! we’re playing Sky Pilot.
Cow: But it takes 3 to jump rope
_____________
Ask the students to identify what each character is doing and what they want. Ask them what they think each character could do next.
Lead a discussion with the students about how they choose which games to play and how they can get others to join their game, or join someone else’s game.
The teachers role play the scenario, with different results, and active input from the students.
After they brainstorm some solutions we will tell them that they are going to finish the movie using puppet pals. In their group of 3 they will each be assigned an animal and they will talk through what each character should do and them record their performance.
Mini Lesson Puppet Pals
Before asking them to break into groups we will do a brief instruction in the control screen of puppet pals. The classroom teachers will also have the iPads set up and on the right screen before students are sent to work.
Known challenges: Noise, the recordings will not be perfect. There will be other voices on the recordings. We can have kids working on the floor as well as at the tables. This is a decision I will let the classroom teacher make.
Reflection 1: In the first implementation we found the kids need to play with the app first, move the characters, zoom in and out, record a sample. On the second visit we are going to assign scenarios to each group and have them work through them (pig and sheep say yes, say no, invite others, get adult help)
